According to Claire KittleSan Francisco 49ers star wife George KittleThere are reasons for optimism in the midst of a hugely disappointing season for the franchise.
The 49ers officially saw their playoff chances evaporate on Sunday, Dec. 22, a season removed by winning the NFC and beating the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime in February's Super Bowl LVIII.
In an exclusive interview with Dr our weekly On Wednesday, Dec. 18, just days before the 49ers' playoff aspirations were all but ended, Clair, 30, spoke of camaraderie inside the San Francisco locker room.
"We have a great group of guys and they all really love each other and hang out outside of football," said Claire, who spoke to us while promoting Kittles' collaboration with Jenny Optical. "They enjoy spending time with each other and keeping that positive light."
Claire added, "They actually enjoy each other. That's always good because that's definitely not the case in every locker room."
Still, Claire couldn't help but acknowledge the elephant in the room: the team's losing record.
“They are competitors, they are professional athletes. They want to win and be successful,” says Claire. “So yes, there is definitely some level of frustration. But you just take it as a learning experience and try to really capitalize on the moments you have, because every year is so different."
He continued, "Changing teams, you know? You don't know if you're going to play with your friends again or if you're going to be on the same team. As far as George, he really tries to focus on that and it's a good thing for everybody. Create experience.
The 49ers are officially out of playoff contention if the Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Rams, both atop the NFC standings, win their respective games on Sunday. The Niners then lost 29-17 to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon.
San Francisco has two games left on the schedule: Monday, Dec. 30 at home against the Detroit Lions and Sunday, Jan. 5 at the Arizona Cardinals.
Although the football season didn't go exactly as planned, Claire thanked the scheduling gods for allowing the couple — who got married in April 2019 — to spend the holiday season at home.
"We were just looking at our schedule yesterday and talking about it and we were like, 'I don't know if we've ever had Christmas Day just the two of us,'" Claire told us. "We're looking forward to it."
The couple will have a relaxing Christmas together, with Claire saying there will be plenty of family time "after the weekend" at the couple's home in California.
It's an extra special holiday season for Kittles, who teamed up with eyewear line Zenni Optical to unveil their latest line of 30 new styles for both men and women.
"They are really great," Claire said of the brand. “They give back to the community in the Bay Area. They do a lot of workshops in the area with Niners that we get to be a part of. George and I have a hand in the entire design process. We pick and choose what we like and send them our own inspiration. It's really fun for George and I to do this together."
