In the Star Trek: Enterprise episode "Chosen Realm" (January 14, 2004), the Enterprise rescues a group of Trianons whose ship has been damaged by a spatial anomaly. The captain of the Triannons, a man named Pri'Nam D'Jamat (Connor O'Farrell), explains that he leads a religious sect tasked with investigating the multiple mysterious mechanical spheres that are scattered throughout this part of the galaxy. The spheres, he says, were created by the gods and will guide his people to correct religious doctrine. He believes that the space around the spheres is holy ground (a chosen realm, if you will).
Suddenly, one of D'Jamat's entourage explodes in a suicide bombing. D'Giamat asks Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) to hand over control of the Enterprise to his sect, as he wants to use the ship's advanced weaponry to aid in the holy war raging on his home planet. Most of the episode is a game of cat and mouse between D'Giamat and Archer as the latter tries to wrest control of the Enterprise from the religious zealots. There are clever transporter-based escapes, and Dr. Phlox (John Billingsley) figures out how to neutralize the chemical explosives on the ramparts. The ending of The Chosen Realm features a harsh, ironic twist worthy of the original Star Trek.
D'Giamat's chief lieutenant, a character named Yarick, was portrayed by actor Vince Grant, and his religious doubts play a central role in the episode's plot. His other followers, however, were completely loyal and even seemed to know how to (generally) run the Enterprise once they had taken it over. The Trianon who takes over the Enterprise's science station is a much smaller character named Jareb. Jareb, as it happens, was played by none other than Taylor Sheridan, better known these days as the creator of the hit show Yellowstone (Acting) and "The King of Tulsa," and the writer of ultra-masculine critical darlings like "Sicario," "Hell or High Water" and "Those Who Wish Me Dead."
Taylor Sheridan played an alien religious zealot on Star Trek: Enterprise
Sheridan directed his first feature film, a horror film called The Glaze, in 2011, and his writing career took off soon after. Many critics loved 2015's Sicario, and Hell or High Water earned him an Oscar nomination. He launched the Yellowstone franchise in 2018, and that run has led to multiple mergers and additional show creation opportunities. Sheridan also devised The Mayor of Kingstown, Legislators: Bass Reeves, Lioness and Landman. Taylor Sheridan's TV shows are essentially a cottage industry now.
Sheridan began his career in front of the camera, however, began his professional acting career in 1995 with a guest appearance in Walker, Texas Ranger. He also enjoyed one-shot roles on multiple hit shows of the late 90s and early 1900s, including on Party of Five, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" and the appearance of "VIP" Sheridan on "Star Trek: Enterprise". ” was just another stop on the road. He gained some attention after the Enterprise playing Danny Boyd in five episodes of Veronica Mars and then enjoyed big screen time with 21 episodes of Sons of Anarchy playing Deputy David Hale.
Sheridan's Star Trek character is too minor to have much impact on the franchise's canon; Unfortunately, Jareb does not appear in any extended universe lore. Indeed, Trianon only appeared in the episode "Chosen Realm"; they're not even notable enough to warrant a Star Trek: Lower Decks reference or gag. Indeed, Sheridan's character is so minor that he could have been credited as a "science station zealot".
If Sheridan wanted to appear in more Star Trek episodes, he probably could; the Star Trek franchise is notoriously generous with its actors and often has guest stars playing supporting roles. But unfortunately, Enterprise was canceled in 2005 (Bakula has a hunch why), and by that point Sheridan was slipping into Veronica Mars. He moved on. We Trekkies, however, will always remember.
