One of the most anticipated horror films of the year is upon us very quickly, as director Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, starring Bill Skarsgård, hits theaters on Christmas Day. This one has been a long time coming, and the director is behind The Witch and The Northman (see where those films fell in our Robert Eggers rankings) promising to put his own stamp on this horror classic some time. To that end, for those who haven't seen the original 1922 Nosferatu, known as Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, now is the perfect time to do just that. More importantly, those who want to watch it right now can do so for free.
More than 100 years ago, the film "Nosferatu" by director F.V. Murnau helped define vampire cinema. It's also one of the most important and influential horror films of all time, so it's fair to say that it's also worth a look before seeing Eggers' take on the material. Fortunately, it's just a few clicks of a button, with no need to break out your old credit card or subscribe to anything to check it out right now.
Easiest way to watch Nosferatu is on YouTube, where it is currently streaming for free. The only catch is the occasional ad break, but it's hard to beat the low, low price of the free 99. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. The movie is also showing for free on Tubi, JustWatchTV, Hoopla, AMC Theaters On Demand, Canopy, Crackle, Plex and more. The point is, it's not hard to find. So no need to rent it on VOD unless someone wants to.
Now is a great excuse to watch the original horror classic Nosferatu
It's a nice reminder that there are plenty of free streaming services out there. Tubes, in particular, have made many advances in recent years. The endless array of services that hardcore movie fans have to subscribe to just to keep up is exhausting. Fortunately, especially for fans of classic cinema, there are plenty of free options out there. If we are talking about fans of hardcore movies, if anyone is interested, the the remastered Blu-ray edition of "Nosferatu" is available on Amazon.
There have been many, many takes on the Dracula legend over the 100 years since this film was released. The vampire genre has also seen several attempts at reinvention, with films like "From Dusk Till Dawn" takes things in a completely different direction. All this to say, Eggers has a bit of a stacked deck when it comes to providing another satisfying reinvention of the Dracula mythos. But if any modern director working in horror today can do it, it's him.
Eggers' Nosferatu also has an all-star cast that includes Nicholas Hoult ("Mad Max: Fury Road"), Lily-Rose Depp ("Idol"), Aaron Taylor-Johnson ("Kraven the Hunter"), Emma Korin ("Deadpool & Wolverine") and Willem Dafoe ("Spider-Man: No Way Home"). As mentioned earlier, it is set to hit theaters on December 25, 2024. You can read the official synopsis for the film below.
Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a possessed young woman and a terrifying vampire infatuated with her, unleashing untold horror in its wake.
