Skeleton Crew Episode 4 takes cues from an animated Disney flop

The following contains spoilers for the latest episode of Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew.

"Treasure Planet" is historic for being Disney's biggest animated flop at the time of its release, but the film's legacy lives on in 2024 thanks to the Star Wars franchise. Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, Disney's sci-fi thriller tells the story of Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a teenage adventurer obsessed with finding the titular planet that hides the legendary space pirate's stolen gold. , Captain Flint. Star Wars Episode 4: The Skeleton Crew also borrows ideas from the fishy space adventure — in a way, the Disney+ series' plot is reminiscent of Flint attacking planets and stealing their treasure (in a good way).

Athens is home to one of the most mysterious Star Wars planets.and that feeling takes on more credibility in episode 4 of "Skeleton Crew." After Jod Na Navud (Jude Law) and the series' young heroes arrive on At Achrann (a planet ravaged by war between the Troik and Hattan tribes), they learn that there is no record of the children's home in the wider galaxy far, far away. What's more, they discover that the coordinates on it have been destroyed after stumbling upon the directions to other undocumented worlds, indicating that something fishy is going on.

The Orphanage is a bona fide secret planet, not unlike the far-flung haven of gold in John Musker and Ron Clements' underrated 2002 Disney film. Furthermore, there are humans (and droids) who want Aten and the Treasure Planet to be kept hidden from the rest of their respective galaxies.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and Treasure Planet have forgettable droids

Space pirates and lost worlds are a big part of Treasure Planet and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, so it's only natural to compare the two stories to some degree. However, there are certain elements of "Skeleton Crew" episode 4 that echo a specific story from the fall of Disney, mainly because of the way they both depict robots that hold forgotten secrets.

In this episode, we learned that SM-33 (Nick Frost) was memory-wiped by his old captain so that no one would find out about Atin. Similarly, a droid called BEN (Martin Short) in "Treasure Planet" had his memory circuit removed by Captain Flint so he wouldn't tell anyone about the pirate's stolen booty.

Episode 4 also reveals that the original starship captain Onyx Cinder killed everyone who saw Atin's coordinates and ordered SM-33 to eliminate anyone who comes close to revealing their secrets - which he tries to do after passing on the information to children. This justifies why Jod Na Naud hates Skeleton Crew droids but it also retells the "Treasure Planet" story detailing Flint trapping the planet to explode if visitors ever stumble upon his prey. Let's just hope our Skeleton Crew heroes don't return to Athens to find it rigged with explosives, too—they've had enough trouble as it is.

New episodes of Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew air Tuesdays at 6pm PST on Disney+.
