I have high hopes for James Gunn Superman And the upcoming DC Universe, or DCU, is being officially branded. I called Suicide Squad"The Best DC Movies in Decades", and I'll stop there (My review). Now, later Creation commandos I want more superhero stories done in animation, I'm all for bringing James Gunn into mainstream superheroing. But there's one thing I don't do that scares me a touch, and it goes back to Superman's origins on planet Krypton.
Superman's parents
I am reading now. Absolute Supermanpart of DC's new Perfection comics franchise, allows for new ventures for some of the more radical heroes. In the first issue, it was revealed that Superman's parents were farmers with a distinct and brutal caste system in Kryptonian society. Traditionally, Superman's parents are depicted as scientists in a utopian world. in Absolute SupermanThey are low-level workers who realize that the ruling class is leading to the destruction of the planet.
This is a fantastic and fresh idea for a stab at Superman's origins. It gives us a reason to see Kal-El's parents and spend time with them and their story. And if James Gunn It has a creative and fresh take on Jor-El and Lara's life, I'm all for seeing how it affects Superman's imagination.
But, if James Gunn is taking inspiration from what I believe, I think so Superman It should show us as many Carl-Ed parents as possible. In fact, I'll be fine if I don't see them at all.
Its origin is now a myth.
James Gunn talks about the voice of his comic book series. All-star Superman Being one of his sources of inspiration for this take iron man. In that comic, writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank summarized Superman's origin in one page, four panels, and eight words. Morrison distills everything down to its purest mythological elements. It's one of the best pages in comic book and superhero history.
I get James Gunn's feelings about the origin of the original superhero. At least I hope so. Just as we don't need to see Bruce Wayne's parents shot to death, the beginning of Clark Kent's life has entered the ranks of pop culture legend, the ubiquitous knowledge that Santa Claus lives at the North Pole. Both are Richard Donner's, understandably so. Superman and Zack Snyder's iron man They felt the need to strongly establish their version of Superman's parents (especially Jor-El in those films). But Gunn could be making a big statement by downplaying that part of Superman's history.
Superman is the ultimate refugee story, and while I don't want the Kryptonian heritage to be thrown in with the escape pod, I feel focusing on Superman's love and relationship with Earth is the best story to tell with the character on the big screen. . Even this one image of Superman and his pet Krypto seems to focus on this notion. Yes, crypto is part of it. Alien The past, and I can't wait to see how that relationship plays out between Clark and the dog. However, the framing of that photo puts them in a context that emphasizes the beauty and importance of Earth to Superman.
The less time we spend on Superman's parents and the impact Krypton history has on the story, the better James Gunn is. Superman it will be. Regardless, I can't wait to see this new movie, even if it has more time to blow up on that planet.
