The unions at five of Amazon's additional facilities have voted to strike, following similar actions in New York and Illinois. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) announced in a statement that union members "unanimously" approved measures to authorize strikes at four Southern California facilities and a fifth facility in Atlanta.
The four Southern California facilities are located in City of Industry, Palmdale, Victorville and San Bernardino. . This brings the total number of Amazon facilities that have allowed employee strikes to eight. Total includes Skokie, Illinois and one facility in Staten Island and Queens. IBT represents fewer than 10,000 workers at 10 Amazon facilities nationwide.
Those facilities allowed for a holiday in the middle of the holiday shopping season, one of the busiest and most profitable times of the year for the online retail giant. According to IBT statements, Amazon crews went on strike to protest low wages, unsafe working conditions and "Amazon's illegal refusal to recognize their union."
Teamsters General President Sean N. O'Brien said in a statement that Amazon did not provide adequate compensation and protections for its workforce. If their demands are ignored, O'Brien says they will begin strikes.
"Amazon workers want to live well, have decent health care and be safe on the job," O'Brien said. "They're done with disrespect, and if Amazon keeps pushing them, they're going to push them to shoot."
