Not long ago, in 2018, there was a unique and unprecedented situation in heavyweight boxing history. Anthony Joshua is the IBF/WBA/WBO champion, Deontay Wilder is the undefeated WBC heavyweight champion, and Tyson Fury is the undefeated world champion.
Three undefeated heavyweight champions, each of whom has a legitimate claim to be called a heavyweight champion. It's an exciting time for the heavyweight division, and hopefully Joshua, Wilder, and Fury will have plenty of fights between the three of them. But that didn't happen. Fury and Wilder have their epic trilogy that's the definition, and that's it. So far, AJ hasn't fought the other two.
In recent years, AJ and Wilder have fallen off the radar and are now outside the Top 3 where they have been for a long time. In that sense, Tyson Fury was the last man standing in his time. Usyk emerged as a heavyweight champion, but he wasn't quite the same guy as the other three, Usyk spent most of the Fury-Joshua-Wilder era as a cruiserweight.
The bout that started the new era, when he defeated long-time champion Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015, officially marked the end of Klitschko's era (year after year 2004 until the night Fury removed Wladimir from power).
Will Fury's victory save the season to see another day? Or will Usyk put the final nail in the coffin?
This version of Rummy corner provides a quick overview of the post-Klitschko season, and looks ahead to the December 21 rematch between the world's two heavyweight champions today - Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury.
