Tennessee pizzeria faces backlash after refusing to host same-sex weddings

A pizza shop in Chattanooga, Tennesseesaid it was a "personal conviction" choice not to provide catering services for same-sex weddings after critics slammed him for the policy.

Wood-fired pizza restaurant Pizzeria Cortile posted a statement to his Facebook account on Tuesday confirmed his policy after the left-leaning media company first drew attention to it a day earlier.

"Recently we made the difficult decision not to have a wedding ceremony because our personal beliefs," wrote Pizzeria Cortile. "This belief comes from a place of personal conviction, a belief that we know is not shared by everyone, and this belief we hold without judging others. This decision was not intended to harm or injure anyone, and we apologize for the pain caused to people who have become part of our community.

"We acknowledge and listen to the feedback from everyone who has contacted us today. We hope that in time we can find opportunities to extend grace and listen to each other, and to remember that even though we may not always agree, we can still serve each other with dignity and love."

The statement thanked the community and asked for the opportunity to "continue to show you love when you come through our doors."

Pizzeria Cortile limits comments under that specific post. However, his Facebook page was flooded with hundreds of negative comments insulting the decision under other unrelated posts.

A previous post from Sunday featuring a photo of one of his dishes received more than 1,500 comments reacting to the controversy in the past 24 hours.

"There's no two sides here. Nobody's asking you to be gay. Or promoting it any kind of message. They asked for pizza. And fanatics refused. That's the story. It is not deeper. It's black and white discrimination," one Facebook comment with more than 200 likes read.

"Are you going to start asking your customers about their sexual orientation when entering the neighborhood?" another mocked top post. "As a bisexual, am I welcome?… Might as well go ahead and put it on your website that you don't cater/cater to gays either."

Another top comment suggested someone alert the IRS to audit the business.

Online commenters also slammed the owner as a "bigot" and hoped their business would suffer from the news.

One commenter defended the business, citing Supreme Court precedent.

"The Supreme Court has ruled on this, and it is not actually discrimination. You are free to make your own choices but so are they. Who are you to force others to share your beliefs but then expect them not to do the same. ," the comment read.

The flood of negative attention appears to have been fueled by posts on Reddit and readers of the progressive news website The Chattanooga Holler, which first drew attention to the company's policy on Monday.

"INBOX: Obviously, Pizzeria Cortile will not cater to same-sex marriage. Just letting people not waste their time (or money)," Chattanooga Holler wrote on its social media account, along with a screenshot response from the pizzeria.

"All I hear is 'We're allowed to be homophobic bc God,'" one person scoffed under Holler's Facebook post.

"Calling bigotry a 'personal conviction' is an understatement," added another.

The social media post was titled, “Big L for Pizzeria Cortile,” on Chattanooga Reddit on Monday also drew more than 900 comments, with the majority appearing to object to the business.

Pizzeria Cortile did not respond to a request for comment.
