Shake Shack was named the most expensive fast food chain

According to a recent study that surveyed American consumers in the fast food price, the burger chain comes out on top for having the most expensive menu. The study comes as Americans say they have felt the pressure of inflation and price increases like never before.

A study conducted by Preply said Shake Shack ranked as the most expensive restaurant for the chain, followed by Five Guys and Sugar Factory.

In March, Shake Shack raised its prices by 3%.

FOX Business has reached out to Shake Shack and Five Guys for comment.

To make their determination, researchers analyzed the language of 57,245 reviews for more than 10,000 restaurants in 50 cities across the country.

To determine the score for overpriced, the authors looked for keywords — such as "expensive" or "rip off" — in restaurant reviews in each city and analyzed how often those keywords were used by the customer.

The cities with the most expensive restaurants are Oakland and San Jose, California, and Virginia Beach, Virginia., according to the study.

"With three out of five cities in the top five being in California, this highlights how California's high restaurant prices keep pace with the state's skyrocketing cost of living," the study said. "In addition to generally higher prices, Californians are known for favoring high-quality ingredients, which are more expensive."

"Unfortunately, some restaurants miss the mark. They create inflated menu prices that are out of line with what might be considered reasonable for the quality and quantity of food on offer."

New York City tops the list of municipalities with the cheapest restaurants.

The study was done like many restaurants and fast food chains have price increased. In May, McDonald's USA President Joe Erlinger defended the increase, denying reports that the increase was significant.

"Recently, we've seen viral social posts and unsourced reports that McDonald's has raised prices significantly above the rate of inflation," he said. "The average price of a Big Mac in the US was $4.39 in 2019. Despite the global pandemic and historic increases in supply chain costs, wages and other inflationary pressures in the following years, the average cost is now $5.29. That's a 21% increase (not 100% )."
