On the sixth day of the "12 Days of OpenAI" live stream, the company presented Projects in ChatGPT, which allows users to create folders and add conversations and documents, bringing these capabilities together in one place.

OpenAI released drafts to ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Teams subscribers on Friday. However, ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu users will have to wait until January to access the new feature. The company said it will "work hard" to offer projects on ChatGPT to all users. Projects can be used on the ChatGPT website or on a Windows desktop. Mobile app users and MacOS desktop app users can view Projects.

The feature is reminiscent of Google's NotebookLM, but it's more focused on applied research. Unlike NotebookLM's Audio Review, projects on ChatGPT do not offer podcast narration. However, users of projects in ChatGPT can access other ChatGPT features such as Voice Mode, Web Search, and Canvas while chatting.

NotebookLM is so popular that some businesses have started using the app outside of research. including tasks such as CRMthanks to the ability to organize files and other information on a specific topic.

Make a project

Projects appear in the ChatGPT sidebar. To create a new one, click the "Plus" icon. After that, you can name the project and customize its colors.

One feature of projects is the ability to customize how they respond through custom instructions. For example, a project manager can open a project to build a website. They can explain what the project is and what the website is for, and ask ChatGPT to approve opening ChatGPT's Canvas for coding.

After that, users can upload the relevant documents to complete the website. Projects receive information from uploaded documents and associated chats. You can move existing chats in ChatGPT into a Project and reference those chats as a data source.

OpenAI plans to expand the types of files supported by Projects next year and add connections to Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive. The company also offers the ability to switch models through projects.

Features such as projects in ChatGPT OpenAI, Anthropicand other chat providers want users to stay on their platforms to do their work.

OpenAI is out Canvas in October and the expanded its reach earlier this week. Canvas allows users to create and edit text or code in ChatGPT without having to copy or paste it elsewhere. Anthropic Claude Artifacts works the same, but it can also display a website prototype.

The rest of the main chat platform, ChatGPT, projects that allow users to organize and work in a single window, indicating that OpenAI plans to keep all of its new features in one place. Unlike the projects on ChatGPT, Gemini 2.0 runs on an experimental version of Flash, and NotebookLM, which lets you interact with Gemini, is a separate app from the Gemini chatbot or other Google products like its coding assistants.
