Watch videos is one of the few use cases early adopters have found for VR headsets, but Apple has only made a handful of immersive videos for viewing it. Blackmagic's new camera could change that. The It's Apple's first camera capable of shooting Immersive Video, and it's available for pre-order for $29,995 and will ship in "first quarter of 2025."
Black magic Worked on hardware and software for content production for Vision Pro . As promised at the time, the camera can capture 3D images at 90fps with a resolution of 8160 x 7200 per eye. Blackmagic says the URSA Cine Immersive uses special lenses "designed for URSA Cine's large-format image sensor with extremely accurate positional information." It also has 8TB of built-in network storage, which the company says “writes directly to the embedded Blackmagic Media Module” and can be live-synced to a DaVinci Resolve media box for editors to access footage remotely.
In addition to URSA Cine Immersive, Blackmagic is also updating DaVinci Resolve Studio to work with Apple's Immersive Video format and including new tools for editors to pan, tilt and roll footage while editing on a 2D monitor or Vision Pro.
The whole package sounds expensive at around $30,000, but you get a lot more than you would normally get with one of Blackmagic's cameras. A normal 12K URSA Cine camera costs about $15,000, but does not include lenses or internal memory. These are standard on URSA Cine Immersive.
Apple has released several short documentaries, sports clips and In Immersive Video format, however, it has not released its own camera to produce content for third-party production companies. And in any case or They can shoot 3D spatial videos, they cannot produce Immersive Video with 180 degree field of view. Blackmagic's camera should enable the creation of more immersive content for the Vision Pro and other VR headsets. Now Apple just needs to make a Vision product that more people are willing to pay for.
