Champion Gabe Rosado says David Morrell needs to "set a trap" for him to injure heavyweight boxer David Benavidez when they fight in 48 days on February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Rosado doesn't think Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) can match the high output of Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) who can knock him down by burying him in volume.
Many fans note that Benavidez is very knowledgeable about Morrell, and his voice makes him very attractive. However, Cuban Morrell's strength, mobility, and boxing skills make him a formidable force. After one fight at 175, Morrell looked better than Benavidez.
Morrell puts his WBA 'all time' light heavyweight title on the line against WBC reigning champion Benavidez in their head-to-head on the PBC Premier video PPV. The winner of this fight will be able to challenge for the undisputed championship at 175.
Rosado's Prediction
"David Morrell vs. David Benavidez. I like Benavidez, but you can't sleep on Morrell," Gabe Rosado said Fight Hub TV for the first February matchup between these two fighters. "Benavidez didn't want this fight. Morrell wanted this fight.
"Morrell looks like he's in the pocket. So if he wins this fight, he's there, because no one really called Morrell out. So, that look shows what Benavidez's kind of like, 'Yeah, whatever.'
"Nobody does that to Benavidez," Rosado said of Morrell trash-talking Benavidez in front of them. “It will be a fire extinguisher. They both argue. The issue is who can take it because they are both going to the map land.
This is a great fight for Morrell to prove himself against a guy that many fans believe is a future star. Benavidez has held his own for the past 11 years, choosing to fight at 168 instead of moving up to 175, which gives him more opportunities for interesting fights. If he had moved up to light heavyweight in 2014, his career would have increased. Benavidez foolishly thought that Canelo Alvarez would fight him and he waited 10 years. What a mistake.
"I think Morrell is the bigger hitter of the two, but Benavidez brings you with the sound," Rosado said. “So, what's the winner? Will it be strong or too strong? That's what it comes down to because I don't think Morrell can match Benavidez's voice.
There is no doubt who is the better shooter between Morrell and Benavidez. Morrell was bright. Will Benavidez be stronger if he doesn't have to deal with the big bucks? Maybe, but he prefers to throw punches in bunches rather than load them.
Strategy: Lodge
“He keeps shooting at you. He doesn't get tired. So, Morrell had to set traps with ground shots in that fight," Rosado said.
Benavidez gets tired. We saw that in his last fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15th. He was tired after six rounds, and Gvozdyk landed several punches in the second half of the bout.
