Jaime Munguia's promoters in Zanfer plan to activate the rematch clause to force a second fight against Bruno Surace for the first half of 2025 after Jaime's sixth-round defeat in Saturday night at the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico.
Taking a match against Surace is no risk. While it appears to be a smart move by Munguia's promoters, it is likely that he will come back and be pushed again. That would make his job worse.
List of Terms
It is not clear why Munguia's promoters put a rematch clause in the contract for a non-title fight that he should win. The 26-year-old Surace was not ranked in the top 15 by any of the four sanctioning bodies. As for the match clause for this fight, it indicates that Jaime's promoters were not confident that he would win. He is the A side; they didn't have a chance.
Former WBO junior champion Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) entered the fight as the favorite and controlled the action throughout the fifth round. In the sixth, Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) dropped Munguia, 28, with a right hand. The referee had no choice but to stop the fight when Munguia came back up as he was in bad shape.
"I say that Zanfer wants to activate the rematch clause for Jaime MunguĂa and Bruno Surace 2 in the first half of 2025 after the unexpected result on Saturday in Tijuana. Information about this project will appear in the next few days," said Salvador Rodriguez X.
Munguia's Future
Also, if Munguia is demoted again, his promoters' decision to fight Surace could be in jeopardy. They need to know the risk of someone else's death and what will happen to their shaken career.
Munguia is popular in Mexico, Southern California, Arizona, and Texas to handle another KO loss against Surace. However, his resistance to punishment could be worse if Surace stops him again.
Assuming Munguia gets knocked out by Surface again, he can still focus on fighting the likes of Caleb Plant, Edgar Berlanga, Diego Pacheco, and Christian Mbilli. In other words, Munguia becomes a gatekeeper or a clearing horse for the youth to gain experience fighting against a faded world champion.
