Jaime Munguia's decision to fight four times in 2024 may have cost him his sixth fight loss to Bruno Surace last Saturday night at the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico. This is a perfect example of a chain lock gone wrong.
High confidence
Former world middleweight title challenger Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) greedy, opting to squeeze in a fourth fight this year, and the unbeaten, little-known Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) took advantage of that by knocking out the Mexican fighter in front of his fans in Tijuana. This was supposed to be a tribute to Munguia, but it was really bad.
Munguia looks heavier in the ring and doesn't seem to have trained as hard as he did in his previous fights this year against Erik Bazinyan, Canelo Alvarez, and John Ryder. Obviously, Jaime thought he could defeat Surace without any problems, but man, he was wrong.
You can see that Surace will be in trouble early on after dropping the second round. The Frenchman stood up and struck Munguia's head with lightning, saying, 'Oh, where did that come from?' No one in the 168-pound division packs a punch like Surace, and Munguia doesn't see the right hand shots he's throwing.
The only reason the fight didn't end sooner was because Bruno, 26, wouldn't let his hands go. He usually defends everything from Jaime, which is understandable. Munguia doesn't respect Surace in the ring, he throws combinations and looks to impress the Mexican fans with quick knockouts.
Bruno Surace: "I know he's a good boxer. So, we did our counter queen," said Surace. “He's a real hero. I want to thank him for the opportunity. This was a great experience for me. Middleweight is my true weight class. But we'll see if it happens (a second fight with Munguia).”
Hype work?
It would be a bad idea for Munguia's Super League promoters to set up a match against Surace. In the second fight, this wise man opposes him to oblivion, and Munguia refuses to kill him.
If Jaime had enough power, they could also join Surace and hope that he would avenge his death. Munguia can't be the Mexican champion. He continued to shadow during his 11-year career. Munguia's career will fade if he fights Surace again because he may lose. The Frenchman was easier than him and scored another KO.
Munguia has always been an outstanding performer. He was never on the knockout side in the three divisions he competed in, from 154 to 168. When he got the Canelo fight, he lost. He and Edgar Berlanga are different types of heroes record created. It's just an illusion.
This defeat puts Munguia's career in jeopardy; He cannot suffer another disease. His promoters at Top Rank need to rebuild him, but do it in a way that suits him against popular criticism.
Die-hard boxing fans have already seen Munguia's incredible performance from day one. He was compared to cans of tomatoes throughout his career in the big money fight against Canelo Alvarez. Now that Munguia has achieved his goal of landing that mega-payday fight against Alvarez on May 4th earlier this year, his promoters are still holding on to a flawless man who needs to be protected to keep him that way.
