A REMATCH against Chris Billam-Smith is "the only way out" for Lawrence Okolie, according to his trainer Sugar Hill.
The two cruiserweights met last weekend at AFC Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium in front of 15,000 fans, largely cheering for Billam-Smith. A hard fought 12 rounds ended when the crowd favorite was awarded a majority decision.
There was already a rematch clause for Okoli if he had lost and his corner said Boxing News they want a second fight.
"Yes, that's the only way. You don't want to wait and try to get a rematch. You want to get it right away. Of course, he knows he did some things (wrongly) because of the statements he made, and he wants to correct those things. He wants to write his mistakes and he wants to be victorious."
What played out between the two fellow fighters was a messy contest with riots, point deductions and running through everything Billam-Smith Okolie had to offer. Is Hill confident the result can be overturned in a rematch?
"I'm very sure," he replied.
"I had confidence in this fight. I will be confident in every fight. That will be something me and Lawrence talk about and figure out for him. Maybe if I had said peekaboo or something he would have gone back to the way he used to do in practice and he wouldn't have been so nervous. I don't know I'm a crazy thinker, so sometimes you have to think outside the box to make things work.'
The neighborhood itself said BN what he wants is a rematch later in his dressing room.
"It has to be. I'm not like let these two guys fight and this and that. We go back."
Billam-Smith agreed That Okolie would only want a chance at redemption.
"He is a proud man. He's a winner at heart and I think that makes sense to him and why wouldn't he. Once again you have a shot at the world title, it's not clear that I turned it on. So yes, I would hope they want a rematch."
